Your waifu killed a man | Epilogues | Beyond Canon Album

I always forget I actually have to keep up with this blog. I still have nothing interesting to talk about so I'm just gonna comment on whatever happened these past few days.

Nice

This one came to me as a really big and at the same time very (un)pleasant surprise. The first thing I must say is that Mr./Ms. JL has an extremely good taste when it comes to women. That's not what I want to dwell on for too long since I can see a big big BIG mistake in this article. I'm the last person to say this, but "Vriska did nothing wrong" is a big stretch. She IS a hero of the story but she's also a self-proclaimed villain and its mentioned many times by her or other characters. She did so many things wrong in fact, that it's not hard to think of her as the worst out of them all (but we obviously know who's ACTUALLY the worst 🤡)

It's also worth mentioning that they specifically said "God Tier". It's not bad but I prefer Vriska with her glasses on.

Other than that article, I wanted to talk about the Homestuck Epilogues a little bit since my physical copy came a few days ago. It's been a little bit over a year since I read them for the first and only time, which is exactly the day the prologue came out. I know the rest of it was updated around a week after, but I like to think of 4/13 as the release date.
I read "meat" first. I didn't think it really mattered what I read first but it very much did. Since your first reading can happen only once, you can't change your decision based on which one you liked the most. I wouldn't say the epilogues were good, but "meat" was definitely my favorite. While "candy" was interesting and gave us a lot of new characters, "meat" stayed faithful to the original story and felt more like a regular Homestuck update than a continuation of the story that's beyond canon.

Which epilogue you start with makes a big difference. You usually like the one you read first more, but also the other one feels odd and out of place. In my opinion when you go "meat" - "candy" it's a lot easier to make the transition. When it comes to "candy" - "meat" you start to confuse one timeline with the other. The events of "meat" take about a month or two, whilst "candy" spans over 10 years.

That's why I think "meat" is the best epilogue to read first.

The only thing about the physical copy of the book that's worth mentioning is the quality of the print. I was actually pretty lucky. I ordered the book 4 months after it came out, but my copy came from the first January 2020 printing! I'm so happy they made the orange text a little darker. Reading it online hurt my eyes so much. At the same time, all the green text (Caliborn, Kanaya, Jake) apart from Jade looks the same. I know that they can't print precisely every shade of a color exactly like it is in the original and I don't think these characters ever speak to each other so It's not that big of a deal.

A new Homestuck music album came out! I was sooooooo excited when it happened. It has 3 songs with lyrics. LYRICS. That doesn't happen often when it comes to HS music since a lot of the tracks are used in the comic for flash [S] pages. The thing that surprised me the most was that horizon made one of the new tracks. I love her past work from 7 years ago and I never expected her to actually contribute to an official album.
While none of the new compositions are better than my favorite post-Homestuck piece "Beatup" most of them are absolutely AMAZING.
My favorite ones are probably "exclusion zone" by horizons and and "SPLIT REALITY".
The first one has horizon's amazing vocals and that's probably why I love it so much. It gives you the same feeling the new story is supposed to make you feel. I'd play it in the background while I read Homestuck^2's Dirk updates.
"SPLIT REALITY" is very loud and dynamic. The best word to describe it would probably be "hardcore". I can't explain why I like it very well. The more emotions a song makes me feel the more I like it and that's what this one does.

"Cosmic Carousel" is also very nice but it doesn't sound Homestuck at all, more like something from Steven Universe. It lacks the electronic sounds or whatever they're called. I don't know I never got into making music.

The most notable song is probably "Four kids (and they play a game together)". Not gonna lie, I feel a little called out, at the same time knowing it's not about that at all! One might say it's about the people who read Homestuck, but it may also be about a character that never took part in their adventure, but knows about it and it affects their life personally. That character might be Harry Anderson, looking at the latest update.

I should talk more about the HS soundtrack. I love it so much. It made me appreciate music a lot more.

I added links to all the songs from the album + more horizon songs so they're easier to find!
Other than that I have nothing else to say.
I'm never gonna learn how to end these posts.
