Broadwaystuck and other songs for sad trolls | Part 1

Broadwaystuck has probably the best music I've ever heard in my life. I'm not saying "good" as in "amazing vocals". OBVIOUSLY not. That would be too easy and the post would probably be less than 100 words long and that's not what I'm going for. (I'm going to turn this post into 2 parts since it's a lot to talk about)

It was a project back in 2012 that had 8 artists working on it. They were all obviously not professionals and actually very inexperienced. A big chunk of the fanbase at that time was very young so I don't think they were particularly aware of what they were doing.
I wanted to talk a little bit about why I love all of their work and how the sometimes not great vocals don't matter.

At first, I wanted to start from off-broadway Aradia and do all of them in the same order as they appeared in the original Braodwaystuck album, then talk about their other works, but I noticed that some songs are worth mentioning together or are very special and I would want them to have their own section so I'm going to go in order of "I do whatever I want" and for different artists, I'll use different colors so if somebody for SOME reason wants to only read about one artist, that's that.

Off-broadway Aradia
She probably has the second most songs out of all of the people I will be mentioning here (Broadway Karkat has a little more). Her voice is NOT the best in my opinion. Don't get me wrong it's lovely, it's just not my thing. Her most popular songs don't sound that bad, I had more problems with the less known ones. When it comes to what she's doing now I think she said it best herself:

  • Blue Lips (Regina Spector - Blue Lips parody) - forcing myself to listen to this song felt so uncomfortable that I had to pause it and actually rethink this whole post idea. The lyrics are kind of awkward along with the delivery and even the singer sounds like she's being forced to record it. If this song didn't exist I genuinely think that the album would not lose much. I'd even say it would be a lot better.

  • Can You Hear Me Now (I have no idea what the original is) - this one was the most boring of all the Broadwaystuck songs. It didn't tell an interesting story, the music wasn't great and it really seemed to me like she put the least effort into it. This one is not that popular so I'm not able to say if it had any impact on the fan music community as a whole but in my opinion, it was made just to fill up some space in the album which is actually alright. Filler songs are ok in my book as long as they're not far off from the rest of the album quality-wise.

  • Safe and Sound - this one is a weird one, the youtube video for this one says it's another one of Off-broadway Aradia's songs, but supposedly it was made by a completely different person: Broadway Aradia. The vocals do sound different, but it's hard to tell if it's the same person singing since the song is very unique when it comes to the rest of the album and she's singing it in a very hushed voice.
I think it's beautiful and I honestly have no criticism for it. The lyrics compared to other Aradia songs are alright and she sounds amazing in this one. I have nothing else to say here.
Broadway Eridan
Many people worked under the pseudonym of "Broadway Eridan". Actually, I can name 3 from the top of my head but only 2 of them worked on the album. One of them sang their own song "Glub-a-Glub" and the other one had a short speaking part in Broadway Karkat's "Love me drowned"
  • 1st voice ("Glub-a-Glub") - this one is obviously a joke song like many other Homestuck fan songs but this one is particularly... bad? Most of the people trying to sound like Eridan do a really bad job at it in my opinion. There are more people featured in this one, such as Broadway Karkat and overall it's just the artists having fun.
  • 2nd voice (Love me drowned, "Love me dead" parody) - I want to talk more about the full song in the Broadway Karkat section so I'm just going to say that I don't like this Eridan, just like the first one. I want him to have a voice that doesn't sound like an old man on his deathbed. I'd like to remind you that Eridan is 13. None of those people sound like kids.
  • 3rd voice ("Tough to be on top") - is not from the original album, but its fairly popular so I had to mention it. This one is GREAT. It really fits and it's not over the top like the other ones. It sounds amazing. When it comes to the song, it's also very nice and the lyrics weren't changed much so you almost can't tell that it's a parody.

When talking about Eridan I should also mention the most known song about him - "Ugly Story" by PhemieC. They made an entirely separate album for their Homestuck songs - "Songs for Sad Trolls" and in my opinion, it's even better than most of the official HS OST albums.
Now, I have a little thing that my dearest friend Grace wrote specifically for this blog, about her opinion on PhemieC:

“Ugly story” was one of the first songs I had heard from phemieC and though these types of songs are not my cup of tea, I was hooked on them. Most of the songs PhemeiC wrote are dedicated to a troll in Homestuck so I thought you know I would have loved “an apology”, a song for Vriska Serket you know my favorite character. But I just couldn’t get behind it. Though again, its been too long since I’ve listened to these songs so I’ll have to give a listen later. I just don't think the tempo of the song fits vriska. The other song I remember loving is Mary, a song for Kanaya. I can’t give a reason why I love it, it just was a bop and I could have jammed to it anytime.

((Thank you for additional 130 words ♥))
